Care Guide

Five habits, years of wear.

Natural fibres respond well to the simplest care. A steady routine is worth more than the strongest cleaner.

1

Weekly Vacuuming

Vacuum weekly using suction-only mode — no beater bar.

Move the vacuum head slowly in the direction of the weave. Beater bars pull natural fibres loose and cause premature shedding. Low suction is sufficient; high suction compresses the pile.

2

Immediate Spill Response

Blot spills instantly with a clean dry cloth — never rub.

Work from the outer edge of the spill inward to stop it spreading. After blotting, mix 1 cup warm water, 1 tbsp white vinegar, and ½ tsp dish soap. Apply a small amount, blot again, then allow to air-dry fully. Never saturate natural fibre rugs with water.

3

Stain Removal by Type

Different stains need different treatments — act before they set.

Oil-based stains: sprinkle baking soda, leave 15 minutes, vacuum. Tannin stains (tea, wine, coffee): use the vinegar-water mix above. Protein stains (food, milk): cold water only — heat sets proteins. For dried stains, loosen gently with a soft brush before blotting.

4

Monthly Rotation

Rotate the rug 180° once a month to even out wear and sun exposure.

Rooms with direct sunlight or heavy foot traffic benefit most. Uneven sun exposure causes colour fading in patches. A quarter or half turn redistributes traffic patterns across the weave.

5

Humidity Control

Keep indoor humidity between 30% and 50% year-round.

Natural fibres like jute and sisal swell in humid air and can develop mould or mildew. In dry conditions they shrink and become brittle. A basic hygrometer (under ₹500) lets you monitor this. Use a dehumidifier in monsoon months, and occasional humidification in very dry winter rooms.

6

Environmental Placement

Avoid placing natural fibre rugs in bathrooms, kitchens, or outdoor patios.

Persistent moisture is the single biggest cause of jute and sisal deterioration. Steam from cooking or bathing causes fibre swelling, discolouration, and structural weakening. If a rug must go in a high-moisture area, choose seagrass — it is the most moisture-resistant natural fibre in the MKT Rugs range.

7

Rug Pad Usage

Always use a rug pad underneath to prevent slipping and protect fibres.

A non-slip pad anchors the rug, prevents edge curling, cushions foot impact, and reduces friction with hard floors that can abrade the backing. Choose a pad 2–3 cm smaller than the rug on each side so the pad stays hidden.

8

Long-Term Storage

Roll the rug around an acid-free tube — never fold — for storage.

Folding creates permanent crease lines that break natural fibres at the fold point. Roll pile-side out around a cardboard or PVC tube. Wrap loosely in breathable cotton or muslin (not plastic, which traps moisture). Store in a cool, dry, dark place off the floor.

9

Annual Professional Cleaning

Book a professional dry clean once a year for deep maintenance.

Specify that the rug is natural fibre (jute / sisal / seagrass / banana fibre) when booking. Insist on dry-cleaning methods only — steam cleaning, wet shampooing, or pressure washing will permanently damage the rug. A professional clean removes embedded grit that vacuuming cannot reach.
