MKT Rugs traces its roots to 2008, when Maa Kali Traders began as a hand-spun jute yarn-making company with a 10-tonne monthly capacity. The company evolved into integrated carpet manufacturing in 2017 and launched MKT Rugs in 2025 as a subsidiary for global B2B export of handcrafted natural-fibre rugs, led by Rahul Sarder.

Yes. Jute is one of the most sustainable natural fibres on earth - it is carbon-negative during growth, requires minimal water and no pesticides, and is fully biodegradable at end of life. MKT Rugs uses local sourcing (within 150 km), renewable energy at our looms, low-impact natural dyes, and fair-wage artisan employment. Read more on our sustainability page.

MKT Rugs holds ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management System) certification and is a member of the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. We also operate under SEDEX/SMETA-aligned social compliance practices and can support buyer-specific certification audits including GoodWeave on request.

Materials

MKT Rugs manufactures handcrafted rugs using jute, sisal, and seagrass. Jute is our flagship fibre, sourced directly from West Bengal farmers within a 150 km radius of our manufacturing unit in Gopalnagar, North 24 Parganas. Raw materials are biodegradable, ethically sourced, and processed without harmful chemicals.

Jute is the softest underfoot, with a warm golden tone - ideal for living rooms, bedrooms, and low-to-medium traffic areas. Sisal is the most durable and stain-resistant, suited to hallways, staircases, and high-traffic commercial spaces. Seagrass is the most moisture-resistant of the three, has a smooth waxy surface, and works well in sunrooms and entryways.

Hand-braided rugs are made by twisting and stitching natural-fibre yarn into thick rope-like braids - durable, casual, and reversible. Hand-woven (or hand-loomed) rugs are produced on traditional looms and offer crisp patterns with consistent thickness. EarthBound pairs hand-braiding with machine stitching for clean modern lines. Spectrum Weaves layers hand-braided, hand-woven, hand-stitched, and machine-stitched finishing for designer drawing rooms, living rooms, and wall art. MKT Rugs uses these approaches across Bengal Folk Craft, Coastal Wave, EarthBound, and Spectrum Weaves.

All natural-fibre rugs shed lightly during the first 4–6 weeks. Vacuum weekly with suction-only mode (no beater bar) to remove loose fibres. Shedding stops naturally as the weave settles. Hand-woven and hand-braided constructions typically shed less than very high-pile or loosely bound styles.

Yes. MKT Rugs uses only undyed natural jute or low-impact natural dyes, no synthetic backings, and no VOC adhesives. The fibres are 100% biodegradable and free from formaldehyde, lead, and chemical fumes - making them safe for nurseries, play areas, and homes with pets.

Pricing & MOQ

FOB pricing typically ranges from USD 6 to USD 60 per sqm, depending on fibre, construction (braided / woven / tufted), pile height, dye complexity, and order volume. Hand-braided jute rugs are at the lower end; multi-colour hand-tufted designs and 100% wool rugs are at the higher end. Request a line-item quotation for accurate pricing.

Care & Durability

Jute rugs perform best in low-to-medium-traffic areas (bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms). For hallways, staircases, and commercial entrances, choose sisal or a sisal-jute blend - sisal fibres are stronger and more abrasion-resistant. With the right fibre choice and a rug pad, an MKT Rugs natural-fibre rug lasts 8–12 years.

Vacuum weekly with suction-only mode (no beater bar). Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth - never rub, never saturate. Keep indoor humidity between 30% and 50%. Rotate the rug 180° once a month to even out wear. Avoid steam cleaning, wet shampooing, and direct sunlight. Book a professional dry clean once a year. See our full care guide at mktrugs.com/care-guide.

Jute and sisal rugs are not suitable for outdoor use, bathrooms, kitchens, or covered patios - persistent moisture causes mould, swelling, and discolouration. Seagrass tolerates short-term humidity but is still not weatherproof. For exterior or wet-area projects, contact us about polypropylene-blend alternatives that mimic natural fibres.
